3 Dewey Decimal System
Библиотечная система классификации книг, при которой все области знания делятся на 10 классов, а внутри каждого класса выделяются десятичные подклассы, разделы и подразделы. Изобретена в 1876 М. Дьюи [ Dewey, Melvil]. Библиотека, бесплатно обслуживающая жителей города или округа [ county], неотъемлемый элемент культурной жизни и образования в стране. Финансируется полностью или большей частью за счет местного бюджета. Первая публичная библиотека была основана в г. Питерборо, шт. Нью-Хэмпшир, в 1833. Система таких библиотек стала быстро расти после 1854 [ Boston Public Library] и особенно в конце XIX столетия, когда они стали финансироваться ведущими промышленниками, прежде всего Э. Карнеги [ Carnegie, Andrew], пожертвовавшим более 40 млн. долларов на их строительство. Публичные библиотеки первоначально находились в ведении штатов. Федеральные власти включились в этот процесс в период администрации Ф. Д. Рузвельта [ Roosevelt, Franklin Delano (FDR)], а 1950-60-е Конгресс принял ряд законов, способствовавших их развитию. В стране насчитывается более 9 тыс. публичных библиотек, среди них 1,3 тыс. имеют филиалы [branches]. Крупнейшая - Нью-Йоркская [ New York Public Library]. Часто служат не только местом, где можно получить любую информацию, но и центром досуга.
